Cody Bellinger Reportedly Eyed by Cubs, Who Else Is Interested in Yankees FA?

Scott PolacekJan 4, 2026

Cody Bellinger and the Chicago Cubs reportedly could be in line for a reunion.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported Sunday that Chicago has "checked in on" the outfielder. However, Heyman also listed the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants as "others showing interest" in the free agent, who has also remained in discussions with the New York Yankees.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees made a secondary offer to the free agent after first sending one last week. New York hopes to keep Bellinger in left with Trent Grisham in center, leaving Jasson Domínguez or Spencer Jones expendable in a trade.

With free agent Kyle Tucker presumably leaving this offseason, that Chicago would be interested in an impact left-handed bat in the outfield to help replace him comes as no surprise.

Bellinger is also a familiar name to the North Siders considering he suited up for them for two seasons in 2023 and 2024. He won a Silver Slugger and was 10th in National League MVP voting in his first season with the Cubs but was not as effective in his second with 18 home runs and 78 RBI.

However, the 30-year-old bounced back in 2025 for the Yankees with a .272/.334/.480 slash line, 29 home runs, 98 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 152 games.

While Bellinger may never return to the form he displayed in 2019 for the Dodgers when he was the NL MVP, a Gold Glover and a Silver Slugger with a .305/.406/.629 slash line, 47 home runs and 115 RBI, it was still a well-timed showing ahead of free agency.

That Chicago is reportedly interested in a market that also includes some of the league's highest-spending teams in the Yankees, Mets and Dodgers is notable since it was among the lowest-ranked teams in percentage of revenue allocated to payroll last season.

If a front office that has been hesitant to spend at times isn't more willing to act like the big-market team it is and do so moving forward, it likely won't be a realistic landing spot for Bellinger or other impact free agents such as Alex Bregman or Bo Bichette.

But that reportedly hasn't stopped the team from at least reaching out to gauge the interest level with Bellinger.
