Knicks' Karl-Anthony Towns, HC Brown Reportedly in 'Good Place' After Early 'Friction'

Scott PolacekDec 31, 2025

Things have reportedly trended in a positive direction between New York Knicks big man Karl-Anthony Towns and Mike Brown as the head coach's first season with the team has progressed.

"Early on, there was some friction," ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on Wednesday's episode of The Hoop Collective podcast (45:15 mark). "... He is asked to do a little bit more gruntwork, he's still having an excellent season. … He and Mike Brown are in a good place right now, from what I'm told."

That the relationship has developed in such a way is notable since Towns told reporters in October he was still "figuring it out" and unsure what his role would be in Brown's offense:

The Kentucky product is attempting 15.0 field goals per game after shooting 16.9 last season, but he is still putting up impressive numbers at 22 points and 11.9 rebounds a night.

While the efficiency isn't quite what it was last season—47.6 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from deep in 2025-26 compared to 52.6 percent from the field and 42 percent from deep in 2024-25—he is a walking double-double who is a major reason for New York's success to this point.

The Knicks are 23-9 and in the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference standings. They are also just 1.5 games behind the Detroit Pistons in the race for the top seed and have an opportunity to clinch home-court advantage for the entire playoffs if they continue playing well over the course of the rest of the season.

And Towns' relationship with Brown developing like this suggests he will become even more comfortable as he garners more experience in the offense.

If that leads to even better numbers in the season's second half, the Knicks will be all the more dangerous come playoff time.
