John Calipari Rips NCAA Eligibility, Transfer Rules in Passionate Speech on Video

Adam WellsDec 30, 2025

Arkansas head coach John Calipari put the NCAA on blast for its eligibility and transfer rules that he thinks are making it more difficult for incoming freshmen to get an opportunity to hone their skills.

In a prolonged rant after the Razorbacks' win over James Madison on Monday, Calipari used his postgame press conference to rip the NCAA's rules on player eligibility:

Calipari seemed particularly outraged by the ability of international players who have entered the NBA draft receiving college eligibility after the fact:

Calipari wasn't the only coach who made their feelings about the NCAA's eligibility rules known on Monday.

Rutgers' Steve Pikiell joked after his team's win over Delaware State on Monday that he is ready to add anyone, no matter how old, to the roster.

The NCAA has made changes to the transfer portal for football recently that are designed to reduce the amount of movement.

Changes to the transfer portal for men's and women's basketball has not yet followed suit, though the NCAA is considering a proposal that would shrink the transfer portal window to a two-week period at the end of the season.

Calipari's comments about eligibility came in the wake of James Nnaji being allowed to play after enrolling at Baylor last week.

Nnaji, a 21-year-old center from Nigeria, was the 31st overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 2023 NBA draft. He never played college basketball before, nor did he ever appear in an NBA or G League game because he remained overseas after being drafted.

The NCAA's decision to grant Nnaji eligibility has been criticized by several prominent coaches, including Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Connecticut's Dan Hurley and Gonzaga's Mark Few.

None of this is to blame Nnaji because he is just taking advantage of an opportunity that presented itself for a player who clearly has a lot of talent, but it does speak to how unclear the NCAA rules on what it takes to maintain eligibility.

The NCAA is currently facing multiple lawsuits from student-athletes over eligibility rules, including from Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia.
