Steve Kerr Says Warriors Are a 'Fading Dynasty,' Wants Draymond to Retire With Team

Doric SamDec 24, 2025

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr had a blunt, but honest, description of his team amid the apparent strife with star forward Draymond Green.

While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kerr declared, "I want nothing more than" for Green to spend his entire career with the Warriors and retire with the team, and he admitted that Golden State is no longer the perennially dominant team it once was.

"You know, we are no longer the '17 Warriors, dominating the league. We are a fading dynasty," Kerr told reporters. "We know that. Everybody knows that."

Kerr and Green had a major heated exchange during the Warriors' game against the Orlando Magic on Monday night, and the four-time All-Star didn't play the final 20 minutes of the team's 120-97 win. Kerr didn't reveal what caused the argument after the game, but he said that Green "made his decision to go back to the locker room to cool off."

Kerr said Wednesday that he and Green had a "good chat" and apologized to each other and to the team. He reiterated that he hopes to continue coaching Green for as long as he's in the NBA.

"My number one goal, honestly, is for him to finish his career as a Warrior with us fighting, metaphorically, not literally, fighting and competing together until we're both gone," Kerr told reporters. "And I believe that's going to happen."

At 15-15, the Warriors rank eighth in the Western Conference. It won't be easy for the veteran core led by Green, Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler to keep up with the young elite teams across the league, but Kerr and company are still holding out hope that they can earn a spot in the postseason and potentially chase another title.

Despite the "fading dynasty," the Warriors are still one of the league's hottest commodities. Golden State will be in a marquee spot on Christmas Day with a matchup against the Dallas Mavericks.
