Lauri Markkanen Landing Spots Discussed by NBA Execs Amid Trade Rumors on Jazz Star

Joseph ZuckerDec 18, 2025

The Utah Jazz still view star forward Lauri Markkanen as part of their long-term future, according to HoopsHype's Michael Scotto.

Scotto reported NBA executives previously cited the San Antonio Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies and Detroit Pistons as possible landing spots for Markkanen.

Even after acquiring De'Aaron Fox ahead of the 2025 trade deadline, the Spurs have enough assets to execute another blockbuster deal.

Markkanen has shot just 34.8 percent from beyond the arc over the last two seasons. Still, his floor-spacing would be a great complement to young cornerstone Victor Wembanyama, and he might benefit from playing alongside Fox, a vastly better playmaker than he presently has in Utah.

The Grizzlies likewise have the draft capital that's required to get a player of Markkanen's stature. Memphis received three first-round picks and a 2029 pick swap from the Orlando Magic in the Desmond Bane trade.

Memphis (13-14) is even lower in the Western Conference standings. Assuming the franchise wants to keep contending, it needs major reinforcements to strengthen the Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.-led nucleus.

When it comes to the Pistons, Scotto reported head coach J.B. Bickerstaff "was fond of their time together" when he worked with Markkanen on the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Still, Detroit may prefer to be patient and see what its current core can achieve together before it goes in on a trade of this magnitude.

Another playoff run will show president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon which areas of the roster need upgraded the most for the Pistons to take the next step up. Trying to speed up that timeline too soon can have negative consequences and lock the franchise into a squad that isn't good enough to fulfill lofty expectations.

Of course, all of the Markkanen speculation is predicated on the Jazz actually trading the 28-year-old. Based on Scotto's report, they're no closer to making that happen.
