Clippers' Season Was ABSURD 😵‍💫

A Blockbuster James Harden Trade Idea to Build a New NBA Contender

Eric PincusDec 8, 2025

The Minnesota Timberwolves have advanced to the Western Conference Finals two years in a row, but the team has a glaring weakness at point guard.

Mike Conley is nearing the end of his career, relegated to the bench. Donte DiVincenzo has filled in well, but he may be better suited as the sixth man.

Buzz around the league has the Timberwolves itching to upgrade at point guard, hampered by heavy investments in Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle, Jaden McDaniels, Rudy Gobert and Naz Reid.

Adding a high-level guard may necessitate getting out of one of those five, a difficult decision, but one the team may feel compelled to make before the trade deadline.

Meanwhile, the LA Clippers have struggled tremendously so far this season. They won't have their first-round pick in June (going to the champion Oklahoma City Thunder), but they need to rethink their plan.

Adding a younger, talented scoring big man such as Reid, along with a prospect like Rob Dillingham, could help the franchise now and into the future.

As always, the under-the-cap Brooklyn Nets are roped in for the following three-team trade idea that lands James Harden (and Chris Paul) in Minnesota, with Reid, Dillingham, and others in Los Angeles.

Full Trade Scenario

Los Angeles Clippers v Minnesota Timberwolves - Emirates NBA Cup

Timberwolves get:

  • James Harden (from Clippers)
  • Chris Paul (from Clippers)
  • Jalen Wilson (from Nets)
  • Clippers get:

  • Naz Reid (from Timberwolves)
  • Mike Conley (from Timberwolves)
  • Rob Dillingham (from Timberwolves)
  • Joe Ingles (from Timberwolves)
  • Tyrese Martin (from Nets)
  • $6.9 million trade exception (James Harden)
  • $8.8 million trade exception (Brook Lopez)
  • $2.7 million trade exception (Kobe Brown)
  • $2.3 million trade exception (Chris Paul)
  • Nets get:

  • Brook Lopez (from Clippers)
  • Kobe Brown (from Clippers)
  • 2027 Cleveland Cavaliers second-rounder (via Timberwolves)
  • $6 million (from Clippers)
  • $1.96 million (from Timberwolves)
  • Notes: The trade would need to wait until January 15, when Reid is eligible to be dealt after re-signing this offseason. The Timberwolves trigger a second-apron hard cap ($207.8 million) by aggregating Reid, Conley, Dillingham, and Ingles for Harden. Wilson is acquired via the Nickeil Alexander-Walker trade exception; Paul via the minimum exception. Depending on timing, Minnesota could add one or two veterans at the minimum before the end of the season (by playing the 10-day game).

The Clippers get Reid and Conley for Harden, using the PJ Tucker trade exception for Dillingham and the Mo Bamba trade exception for Martin (both within the $250,000 allowance). Harden would need to approve the deal and waive his trade bonus to join a team with a greater chance of contending this season than his current squad. Ingles would also need to agree to the trade (both subject to the One-Year Bird rule).

Brooklyn finishes the trade about $8.3 million under the salary cap.

Why the Minnesota Timberwolves Do It

The knock on Harden is on the defensive side of the ball, but the Timberwolves are gifted there with Gobert, McDaniels, Edwards, etc.

Adding a high-level playmaker, shooter, and dynamic scorer in Harden, even at age 36, significantly changes Minnesota's offensive attack. He is currently averaging 26.9 points with 8.4 assists a game for L.A., shooting 36.8 percent on a high diet of three-point attempts (10 per game).

He wouldn't need to do nearly as much for the Timberwolves, helping top scorers like Randle and Edwards get their shots. The Clippers have a long list of problems this season, from injuries to the investigation into a potential illegal sponsorship agreement surrounding Kawhi Leonard. Harden was not only named an All-Star but also to the All-NBA third team last season.

Financially, the Timberwolves can avoid next year's projected second apron ($223.1 million) with Harden's $42.3 million on the books. But the team may rework his deal this summer, getting him to opt out (only $13.3 million of his salary is guaranteed), to re-sign at a workable number on a multi-year deal (similar to what the team did with Gobert in 2024).

While the cost for Harden is Reid, a well-loved player in the Minnesota community (search for Naz Reid tattoos), the question is less Harden or Reid, and more about starting point guard or reserve big man. The budget, within the NBA's salary-cap system, may not allow for both.

Beyond Reid, the Timberwolves give up on Dillingham, who may never get the chance to develop in a win-now situation properly. Conley and Ingles help make the trade cap worthy. Paul replaces Conley as a backup point guard. Wilson has shown promise when given minutes with the Nets.

Why the LA Clippers Do It

    Minnesota Timberwolves v Sacramento Kings

The Clippers are motivated to "win" without their first-round pick, but the team is too old, injured and struggling for any sort of consistency in the Western Conference.

Losing Harden's offense would be a setback, but it's time to start planning for the future.

Reid is just 26 and would have the chance to see if he can play alongside (or even replace) Ivica Zubac. L.A. may be unlikely to find a player of his caliber in the free-agent market if it prioritizes cap room this July.

Also, if the Clippers are truly shifting their focus to the future, Zubac may be their most appealing player on the trade market.

Dillingham gives L.A. a viable prospect to develop, without the pressure he has in Minnesota to help the Timberwolves advance beyond the conference finals. The Clippers get a capable veteran point guard in Conley and a look at Martin (Ingles helps make the numbers work).

Additionally, the Clippers avoid the luxury tax this season, resetting the repeater penalty. With Reid and Dillingham, L.A. could have roughly $33 million in cap room this July, with team decisions pending on Bogdan Bogdanović, Kris Dunn, and Cam Christie—assuming Leonard's $50.3 million remains on the books—along with player options for Bradley Beal and Nicolas Batum.

Assuming the Clippers, Timberwolves and Nets can agree to a deal in January, L.A. would have time to explore deals for others on the roster such as John Collins, Derrick Jones Jr., Bogdanović, Zubac, etc. The goal wouldn't be to bottom out, but to add quality players who can contribute now and into the post-Leonard future.

Asking the team to accept the sunk cost of the lost first-round pick to the Thunder may be a stretch, but what's done is done, and it's not like the current squad is killing it in the standings.

Finally, the Clippers and Paul have agreed to part ways. He hasn't been waived, and the team may hold onto his contract through trade season. If that changes before January, Ingles can be removed from the deal, with Martin going to Minnesota instead of Paul.

Why the Brooklyn Nets Do It

Denver Nuggets v Los Angeles Clippers

The Nets are patiently holding onto cap room, available to take on salary from other franchises for profit.

In this three-team swap, Brooklyn gets a chance to see if Brown can contribute outside of Los Angeles, on a team that's been focused more on trying to win (despite this year's meager results) than player development.

Lopez spent nine seasons with the Nets early in his career. He's on an expiring contract (with a team option for another season) and can either finish the year with Brooklyn or accept a buyout. The Clippers hoped he'd fill in well behind Zubac, but the team's lack of depth (injury-related and in makeup) and athleticism hasn't been a good fit.

The Nets get a second-rounder and the maximum $8 million in cash allowed this season, netting at least $1 million on the remaining salary due Lopez and Brown (depending on the day the deal executes).

Brooklyn still has time to make additional deals with its $8.3 million in remaining cap space and $8.8 million room mid-level exception.
