Warriors Must Risk It All To Win Giannis Sweepstakes amid Latest NBA Trade Rumors

Zach BuckleyDec 4, 2025

The basketball gods have given the Golden State Warriors a lifeline.

While they aren't guaranteed to grab it, they better be doing everything in their power to make it happen. Because otherwise, they can probably ditch the dream of giving Stephen Curry another shot to add to his championship collection.

It all revolves around the not-totally-here-but-probably-here Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes. They aren't being held just yet, but ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Antetokounmpo and his agent "are having conversations with the Milwaukee Bucks about the two-time NBA MVP's future."

Considering this is far from the first future-focused chat these parties have had, Antetokounmpo's exit from Milwaukee feels more like a when than an if scenario. The Bucks have exhausted resource after resource into trying to field the most competitive roster possible around him, and they've managed a losing record despite him playing at perhaps his highest level to date.

His All-Star sidekicks from the past are gone. His best teammate now is...hmm...Kevin Porter Jr.? Myles Turner? One-time Warrior Ryan Rollins? The pickings are slim.

This is, frankly, the opportunity-knock the Warriors have been hoping to hear. Because while they have their own generational great in Curry, they also have the same struggles to putting a championship-caliber supporting cast around him.

Jimmy Butler is solid, but his offensive aggressiveness comes and goes. Draymond Green helped Golden State become the dynastic force it once was, but he's always had limitations. Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski are backtracking in their development. Al Horford looks like he's aged in dog years since leaving Boston.

The Warriors are, in a sense, stuck. Their situation just isn't as sticky as Milwaukee's, because Golden State has actual trade assets at its disposal.

Now, this isn't the richest asset collection in the Association by any stretch. It's good enough, though, that if Antetokounmpo signaled a desire to land with the Dubs, they could send out a not-insulting package to the Bucks.

It would, admittedly, take most of what Golden State has to get a deal done. ESPN's Zach Kram recently opined that a deal for Antetokounmpo might cost the Dubs: Green, Kuminga, Buddy Hield and first-round picks in 2026, 2028, 2030 and 2032. Considering the draft capital involved, that's basically everything Golden State can give.

With Antetokounmpo still holding his own in the best-player-on-the-planet debate, even that may not be enough. Teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets could all put richer offers on the table.

That said, they don't carry the same sense of desperation as the Dubs. Their championship windows are wider, and their present outlooks are brighter. That doesn't mean they'd all stay away—it's freakin' Giannis we're talking about—but their fanbases might at least understand why they'd not to want to risk disrupting what they have.

The Warriors can make the same sales pitch. They aren't contenders as currently constructed, and given the ticking clock attached to the 37-year-old Curry (38 in March), it might be a Giannis-or-Bust scenario in terms of returning them to the championship stage.

So, they have to make the best push they can. The franchise's entire focus should be on getting a deal done.

They've been waiting with fingers-crossed for this very situation to surface. It's seemingly here now, and they can't take it for granted. Save for Curry himself, no one and no asset should be considered off-limits. This might be their only reasonable shot at making a title run in the foreseeable future.
