Will Ty Lue Be Fired by Clippers? Frank Explains After Chris Paul Was Sent Home

Adam WellsDec 3, 2025

Amid a brutal start to the season for the Los Angeles Clippers that hit a new low on Wednesday morning when it was revealed Chris Paul was being sent home, head coach Tyronn Lue's job is not in jeopardy.

Speaking to reporters about the Paul decision, Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank took responsibility for assembling this roster and said Lue "will be the coach" going forward.

Paul signed a one-year deal in July to return to Los Angeles, where he previously played seven seasons from 2011 to '17. It was expected to be a move that boosted the depth for the Clippers and gave Paul a chance to compete for a title in the twilight of his career.

Instead, almost everything that could go wrong for the Clippers, has gone wrong. They are tied with the Sacramento Kings for the second-worst record in the Western Conference (5-16) and rank 24th in net rating.

Paul had largely fallen out of the primary rotation for Lue. The 12-time All-Star appeared in 16 out of 21 games, averaging 14.3 minutes per contest.

Per ESPN's Shams Charania, Paul's leadership style "clashed" with what the Clippers wanted and Lue was "not on speaking terms with Paul for several weeks" prior to Wednesday's announcement.

Lue has been regarded as one of the best head coaches in the NBA for several years now. He has been tasked with navigating around extended absences for star players during his time with the Clippers, most notably Kawhi Leonard's frequent injury woes.

Despite a lack of roster continuity throughout his tenure, Lue has led the Clippers to five consecutive winning seasons entering the 2025-26 campaign. He ranks second among all head coaches in franchise history with 239 regular-season wins and 16 playoff victories.

The Clippers signed Lue to a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2028-29 season in the summer of 2024 after he was being courted by the Los Angeles Lakers.
