Why Was Clippers' Chris Paul Sent Home? NBA Insiders Dish On Behind-the-Scenes Issues

Doric SamDec 3, 2025

The Los Angeles Clippers surprised many when they announced overnight that they are parting ways with veteran point guard Chris Paul, but there reportedly were deeper issues that led to the decision.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported that sources said that Paul's leadership style "clashed" with the Clippers, as he had been "vocal in holding management, coaches and players accountable, which the team felt became disruptive." Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue reportedly "was not on speaking terms with Paul for several weeks."

Lue said of Paul's departure: "It just didn't work out like we thought it would... Just wasn't a good fit."

NBA insider Chris Haynes also reported Paul requested a meeting with Lue, but the head coach "refused to meet with him." Haynes added the Clippers were stuck at the airport in Miami "for nearly six hours" because of mechanical issues, leading to players "finding out in the middle of the night" that Paul was let go by the team.

Paul announced on Nov. 22 that he will be retiring at the end of the 2025-26 season. Haynes noted that the 40-year-old "desired" for his last season to be with the Clippers, but the team opted to cut ties with him.

"We are parting ways with Chris and he will no longer be with the team," Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank said in a statement, per ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk. "We will work with him on the next step of his career. Chris is a legendary Clipper who has had a historic career. I want to make one thing very clear. No one is blaming Chris for our underperformance. I accept responsibility for the record we have right now. There are a lot of reasons why we've struggled. We're grateful for the impact Chris has made on the franchise."

This season has fallen well below expectations for the Clippers, as they rank 14th in the Western Conference with a 5-16 record. The team has lost five straight games and 14 out of its last 16. Paul didn't make much of an impact on the court, averaging 2.9 points and 3.3 assists in 14.3 minutes across 16 appearances.

Still, Paul has long been known as a vocal leader in any locker room he's been in, so it's not a surprise that he tried to give the Clippers a spark in his own way. It appears that the team couldn't handle his fiery nature amid its ongoing struggles, so he will now look for a new home for the final few months of his legendary career.
