Will LeBron James Play for Lakers vs. Celtics? Latest Updates on Foot Injury Timeline

Scott PolacekDec 5, 2025

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has been ruled out for Friday's game against the Boston Celtics with a foot injury, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

The news comes after the Lakers announced that James was doubtful for the marquee matchup due to left foot joint arthritis, in addition to his lingering sciatica.

It's no surprise James will be sidelined as Friday is also the second night of a back-to-back for Los Angeles. His NBA-record streak of consecutive games with at least 10 points ended in Thursday's 123-120 win over the Toronto Raptors.

Since making his season debut on Nov. 18, James has not played in both ends of a back-to-back. He sat out the frontend of the Lakers' home games against the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 30 and Phoenix Suns on Dec. 1.

James' health has been a major storyline for the Lakers at times this season, as he was sidelined for the first 14 games because of sciatica on his right side. He also missed a game in November because of foot management.

This is the King's 23rd season in the league, which makes it all the more notable when he misses time considering how much wear and tear he has dealt with throughout his lengthy career. He is also 40 and not expected to completely carry a franchise like he was at his peak.

Still, James was a Second-Team All-NBA selection in 2024-25. He is off to a slow start by his standards so far this season, averaging 14.0 points, 7.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game while shooting 41.3 percent from the field and 25.9 percent from deep this season.

With James out against Boston, Austin Reaves will carry the bulk of the offensive load. Luka Dončić, who didn't play against the Raptors, will miss his second straight game due to personal reasons.

Look for the combination of Rui Hachimura, Maxi Kleber and Jake LaRavia to see more playing time for the 16-5 Lakers heading into a matchup with their historic rivals in Boston at TD Garden on Friday night.
