When Will Trae Young Return from Knee Injury? Hawks Update Star's Recovery Timeline

Paul KasabianNov 29, 2025

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young, who has been out since suffering a right MCL sprain on Oct. 29 at the Brooklyn Nets, will be re-evaluated in approximately two weeks, per an official team update on Saturday.

The 27-year-old Young has averaged 17.8 points and 7.8 assists in five games this season.

That marked a slower start than usual for Young, who also shot just 37.1 percent from the field before suffering the knee injury.

Young has averaged 26.5 points on 43.5 percent shooting (35.6 percent from three) and 10.2 assists over his past six seasons. He is also a four-time All-Star who led the NBA with 11.6 assists per game last season.

Despite the loss of the former Oklahoma star, the Hawks have fared well this season, going 12-8 and slotting fifth in the Eastern Conference thus far.

Jalen Johnson looks like a breakout superstar (21.9 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 7.3 APG), and Nickeil Alexander-Walker is unquestionably the best free agent pickup in the league, as he's broken out himself (19.3 PPG, 3.5 APG, 3.1 RPG).

Dyson Daniels, the runner-up in the Defensive Player of the Year race last year, has continued his sensational efforts on that end (e.g. 2.2 steals per game). The bigs have also been productive, with Kristaps Porziņģis (18.7 PPG, 5.9 RPG) and Onyeka Okongwu (16.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG) both faring well.

The Hawks have won eight of 11 games, so they are certainly holding their own without Young. Having him back in the mix, though, would certainly be a boost as Atlanta continues its impressive season.

For now, it appears Young will miss at least five more games, which is how many contests Atlanta will play from Nov. 30-Dec. 6. His availability may be dicey as ell for the Hawks' next two games after that stretch: Dec. 12 at the Detroit Pistons and Dec. 14 vs. the Philadelphia 76ers.

Then the Hawks have a four-day break until a very busy stretch to end the 2025 calendar year with 10 games in 17 days from Dec. 18-Jan. 3. Hopefully Young will be good to go sometime during (or before) that point.
