Will LeBron James Retire? NBA Insider Dishes On Lakers Star's Mindset on Future

Adam WellsNov 28, 2025

Having made a positive impact for the Los Angeles Lakers in three games since returning from sciatica, LeBron James is still unsure about when his storied NBA career might come to an end.

Per ESPN's Dave McMenamin, people close to the future Hall of Famer "have insisted that he remains undecided" about a retirement timeline.

There has been a lot of attention on James' future in Los Angeles since June when ESPN's Shams Charania reported he was opting in to this $52.6 million salary for the 2025-26 season, but his agent, Rich Paul, also offered a cryptic statement about where the organization was at right now:

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

Speaking to reporters at the start of training camp in September, James made it clear he is "excited about today" and was "super-invested" in this season because "because I don't know when the end is."

James concluded his statement by noting the end is "a lot sooner than later," while also saying he was "not waiting" on his other son, Bryce James, to reach the NBA to make a decision about his playing future.

Bryce, who is a freshman at Arizona, would be eligible for the 2026 NBA draft if he decides to leave college after this season.

The stated desire to compete for a championship certainly looks like a possibility for the Lakers right now. They are off to a hot start with a 13-4 record, tied with the Denver Nuggets for second in the Western Conference.

Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves have been fantastic in carrying the load, especially while James missed the first 14 games of the season. He has also taken a bit of backseat to them in the offense, at least from a scoring perspective.

James is averaging career-lows in points (17.7) and field-goal attempts (13.3) per game, albeit in just three starts. He's still a very efficient scorer with a 52.5 field-goal percentage and playmaker with 8.7 assists per contest.

There's been no indication from his initial appearances this season that James is slowing down. He will turn 41 on Dec. 30 and is already the first player in NBA history to play in 23 seasons.
