What is Victor Wembanyama's Timeline to Return to Spurs Amid Calf Injury?

The San Antonio Spurs announced Monday that Victor Wembanyama underwent an MRI that determined he's dealing with a left calf strain.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the superstar big man is "expected to be sidelined for a few weeks."

ESPN's Michael C. Wright reported that the Spurs will reevaluate Wemby in 2-3 weeks, with the expectation that he'll be out for at least a two-week period. He added that the Spurs "are being especially cautious given all the calf injuries we've seen lately turn into something worse. For what it's worth, I'm told Vic feels fine."

He had previously been ruled out of Sunday's 123-110 win over the Sacramento Kings due to calf tightness.

"It's just something that he felt," San Antonio head coach Mitch Johnson told reporters after the game. "I don't think there was a specific play. Obviously, we've seen around this league recently, the calf-tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly. So, [we've] just got to get some more information. Don't want to push it there."

"Again, [with] calf tightness, there are certain things that you don't want it to be a gateway thing or anything like that," he added. "So, you just need to be clear on what's going on out of precaution here."

It was a tough day for the Spurs despite the win, with Stephon Castle ruled out for the second half due to a hip injury.

As for Wemby, the 21-year-old has been incredible this season, averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, four assists and a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game. Deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder cut his 2024-25 season short after just 46 games, but he returned with a vengeance to start this campaign.

That will now be put on temporary hold, however, as he recovers from his calf strain.
