Why Was LeBron James Assigned to Lakers' G League Team? Latest on Injury Rehab

Doric SamNov 12, 2025

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is taking another step in his rehab from sciatica.

Per ESPN's Shams Charania, the Lakers assigned James to their G League team on Wednesday so that he can participate in his first full five-on-five practice as he ramps up his on-court activities.

James missed the start of the 2025-26 season after developing sciatica early in training camp.

While the Lakers didn't put a timetable on his recovery, head coach JJ Redick announced on Nov. 10 that the 40-year-old will begin practicing with the team's G League affiliate in South Bay in preparation for his 23rd NBA season, which will set a new league record for most seasons played.

One reason for James to practice with the South Bay Lakers is the NBA club is in the midst of a five-game road trip that runs through Saturday. The Lakers' next home game is on Nov. 18 against the Utah Jazz.

Despite missing one of their best players, the Lakers started the year with an 8-3 record. Star guard Luka Dončić has been on a tear with averages of 37.1 points, 9.1 assists and 9.4 rebounds per game in seven starts. He's been supported by rising star Austin Reaves, who has started out hot with 30.3 points on 48.0 percent shooting.

While James is nearing the end of his legendary career, he's shown that he still has a lot left in the tank. He's coming off a strong 2024-25 campaign in which he played 70 games and averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists.

If James is anywhere close to his usual form, the Lakers will have a strong chance to be one of the top contenders in the Western Conference. Adding him next to Doncic and Reaves would create a dangerous trio that can carry Los Angeles to the NBA Finals.

However, it makes sense that the Lakers won't rush James back into the lineup as he continues his recovery. Forwards Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt and Jake LaRavia will continue to see extended minutes until James is able to return.

As James prepares to start practicing in the G League, the rest of the Lakers are in Oklahoma City on Wednesday night for a marquee matchup with the reigning NBA champion Thunder.
