Mavs' Daniel Gafford Reportedly Expected to Draw Trade Interest Before NBA Deadline
A Dallas Mavericks big man reportedly could garner some trade interest at this year's deadline.
Per NBA insider Marc Stein, Daniel Gafford "is sure to surface," though Dallas has "not entertained the idea of trading him" since Dereck Lively II has been dealing with an injury.
Gafford, now in his seventh NBA season and third with the Mavs, is putting up 8.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game through five contests, playing 19.6 minutes per game. He missed the start of the season because of an ankle injury he suffered in preseason.
While Gafford has started all five games that he's played this year, he might move into a role off the bench once Lively returns from injury. Lively played the first three games of the season but has been out since late October because of a right knee issue.
Assuming Lively returns to his regular spot in the starting lineup, the Mavs might be willing to move on from Gafford at the deadline. It is worth noting that Dallas committed to Gafford this offseason, giving him a three-year, $60 million extension.
After a rough start to the season, however, the Mavericks' plans for Gafford's future might change. Dallas has started the year 3-7 and appears to be far from a contender.
If the Mavs' struggles continue by the time the trade deadline rolls around in February, a deal for Gafford or another player could be on the table.
