What Is Brock Purdy's Injury Status for 49ers vs. Cardinals Next Week?

Andrew PetersNov 9, 2025

San Francisco 49ers fans got a positive update on their starting quarterback following Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan said Brock Purdy is "further along" than he was in Week 4 and gave him a chance to play next week against the Arizona Cardinals.

"I do believe he's further along than he was (in Week 4) so hopefully he'll have a chance this week," Shanahan told reporters.

Purdy hasn't played since Week 4 while dealing with a turf toe injury. He suffered the injury in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks and missed Weeks 1 and 2 before returning against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He aggravated the injury against the Jaguars and has been week-to-week ever since.

In recent weeks, Shanahan has hinted at the possibility of Purdy playing, but he has yet to make his return. Last week, Shanahan said the team is "pretty confident" Purdy will be able to play again at some point this season.

Purdy is coming off a season in which he threw for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. In the two games he has played, Purdy has been solid, collecting 586 yards and four touchdowns, but also throwing four interceptions.

Luckily for the Niners, Purdy's backup has played well in his place. Mac Jones, who joined the team over the offseason following stints with the New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars, has reignited his career in San Francisco.

He's thrown for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in eight games, going 5-3 under center. He had 319 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's loss.

San Francisco fell to 6-4 with Sunday's loss, but is still very much alive in both the playoff race and the division race. Jones has proved capable of leading the team to wins, but the 49ers would prefer to have both quarterbacks available.
