Bronny James Talks Viral Video of Austin Reaves Alley-Oop, Lakers Role
Having received extended playing time in back-to-back games this week, Los Angeles Lakers guard Bronny James is starting to get comfortable in his role with the offense this season.
Speaking to reporters at Saturday's shootaround, James explained that he's working "to be aggressive" in ways that allow him to show off his playmaking skills.
James also reflected on the highlight-reel moment in Sunday's 130-120 win over the Miami Heat when he got to throw down a dunk on an alley-oop from Austin Reaves in the first quarter.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick has been able to get James on the court more often this season than during his rookie campaign. He's averaging more than five minutes per game (11.8 to 6.7).
This hasn't yet translated into better offensive play from James. His scoring has actually gone down from 2.3 points per game last season to 1.5 through six appearances this season.
James' shooting is still a concern, as he is only making 21.4 percent of his field-goal attempts on 2.3 shots per game. He did have his best all-around performance of the season on Monday with five points and six assists in 19 minutes.
That was James' second-most playing time in a game so far this season. He played 20 minutes in the Lakers' 122-108 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Oct. 27.
The fact that James has played in each of the Lakers' last three games does speak well to where he stands on the depth chart at this point. It's the first time he has played in three consecutive games since the final three games of the 2024-25 season.
Saturday's game against the Hawks could be another opportunity for James to get on the floor for an extended period of time. Reaves has already been ruled out due to a groin injury. Maxi Kleber is questionable due to an abdominal injury. Gabe Vincent remains out of action due to a sprained ankle.
The Lakers have been one of the NBA's most pleasant surprises to start the season. They have won five straight games and are second in the Western Conference with a 7-2 record.
