Erik Spoelstra's Miami-Area Home Heavily Damaged After Massive Fire
Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra's home was heavily damaged by a massive fire on Thursday morning, officials told the Associated Press.
Miami-Dade County fire officials said the blaze was called in at 4:36 a.m. ET. Spoelstra and the Heat played a road game against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night and didn't land back in Miami until 5:11 a.m. ET.
Per Briana Trujillo of NBC Miami, Battalion Chief Victoria Byrd said firefighters found "two structures on the property fully involved" in fire, with flames "as tall as the trees" upon arriving at the residence, and called for back up. More than 20 units responded to the fire, battling it from the air and ground until they were able to extinguish it. The home had partially collapsed, causing authorities to switch to a "defensive attack."
"Due to the privacy wall and a lot of the tree cover, it was very difficult to access, with only one point of entry," Byrd said.
Spoelstra arrived at his home shortly after the Heat landed back in Miami and found several fire crews working to contain the blaze. Officials declared the blaze as contained over three hours after fire trucks first arrived to the scene, but smoke was still seen rising over parts of the property.
The Associated Press reported that property records showed that Spoelstra purchased the five-bedroom, six-bathroom home in December 2023. There were no immediate reports of any injuries from the fire, and county officials said that no nearby homes were damaged.
