Kansas' Darryn Peterson Reportedly Generating 'Most Excitement' Among NBA Scouts

Joseph ZuckerNov 4, 2025

Kansas guard Darryn Peterson is climbing to the top of 2026 NBA draft boards, according to The Athletic's Sam Vecenie.

In his newest mock draft, Vecenie wrote that "Peterson remains the 2026 draft prospect I hear the most excitement about from scouts."

The draft expert added that Peterson is generally considered to be on the same tier as BYU's AJ Dybantsa and Duke's Cameron Boozer.

"But my conversations seem to reveal a preseason consensus around Peterson at No. 1, Dybantsa at No. 2 and Boozer at No. 3," Vecenie said.

Peterson was the No. 2 overall player in 247Sports' composite rankings, sandwiched between Dybantsa and Boozer. Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman had the Naismith Prep Player of the Year as the top standout in his preseason mock draft:

"Kansas figures to run a big portion of its offense through his transition speed, ball-screen navigation and one-two punch of driving and pull-up shooting. While he doesn't possess AJ Dybantsa's positional size or explosion, he's still a solid 6'5" with a combo-guard skill versatility and plenty of athletic pop for finishing and making wild defensive plays.

Improving his catch-and-shoot game may be atop his to-do list. But on the ball, the eye test sees clear translatability with how sharp he's become at changing gears off the bounce, splitting defenses, hitting tough jumpers, scoring around the rim, leveraging his gravity into playmaking, forcing turnovers and erasing shots at the basket."

Kansas' 94-51 victory over Green Bay in its 2025-26 opener didn't reveal all that much. Peterson did at least deliver a performance that helped to show why he's so highly regarded. He finished with 21 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steal in 22 minutes.

During the 2023 and 2025 NBA draft cycles, one player dominated the conversation regarding the No. 1 pick. Victor Wembanyama and Cooper Flagg were the wire-to-wire favorites in their respective years.

Peterson doesn't appear to have that same lead on Dybantsa and Boozer. As the year unfolds, the order of those three could evolve, though the onus is on Dybantsa or Boozer to knock Peterson off his perch.
