Kings' Updated Roster, Salary Cap After Reported Precious Achiuwa Contract
The Sacramento Kings made a tweak to their roster after a 2-5 start to the 2025-26 season, reportedly agreeing to terms with free agent Precious Achiuwa, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Tuesday.
Second-year center Isaac Jones was waived in order to create roster space for Achiuwa, per Charania.
Jones was playing on a $1.96 million club option this season. He was set to hit restricted free agency next offseason, per Spotrac.
The Kings will take on a $191,043 cap hit by waiving him, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.
The move will also apply $214,151 to the team's salary total impacting the luxury tax, per Marks.
Sacramento had $3.15 million in tax space prior to Tuesday's signing, per Spotrac.
The Kings were also $7.6 million below the first apron and $19.5 million below the second apron before the trade, Spotrac reported.
Sacramento's frontcourt has been tested in the early stretch of the season after the team lost Keegan Murray to a UCL tear in his left thumb.
Murray underwent surgery last month. The Kings said at the time his status would be reevaluated next Monday at the earliest.
Achiuwa, 26, averaged 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in 57 games last season for the New York Knicks.
He signed a one-year deal with the Heat in September but was waived before opening night after averaging 4.8 points and 5.3 rebounds in four preseason games.
His arrival as a backup option behind Domantas Sabonis will help the Kings add some frontcourt depth while waiting for Murray to return.
The move will cost the franchise a younger player in Jones, a 25-year-old signed with the franchise as an undrafted free agent last July.
Jones had already seen his playing time decline after struggling in the 2025 preseason. He totaled just 17 minutes across three games before he was waived from his second season with the Kings.
The Kings have already been giving more playing time to 2025 first-rounder Nique Clifford and undrafted free agent Dylan Cardwell than might have been expected during their rookie seasons.
Achiuwa will provide a more veteran presence as he arrives in Sacramento with five years of NBA experience split between the Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks.
Achiuwa could potentially make his Kings debut Wednesday night during a 10 p.m. ET home game against Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.
