Grizzlies' Ja Morant Says 'Ask the Coaching Staff' About His Struggles vs. Lakers

Andrew PetersNov 1, 2025

After a lackluster performance in Friday's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant appeared frustrated with his squad's coaching staff.

Morant went 3-of-14 from the field with eight points in the 117-112 loss. When asked what went wrong for him, Morant told reporters to "go ask the coaching staff." In terms of what the Grizzlies could have done better, Morant said, "according to them, probably don't play me."

As Morant posted his worst game of the season so far in the loss, Lakers star Luka Dončić thrived in his return from injury, posting 44 points and 12 boards.

The Grizzlies are in their first full season under head coach Tuomas Iisalo, who took over in March last year following Taylor Jenkins' firing. It's still early, but Morant clearly seems to have some disagreements with Iisalo.

Memphis has started the season 3-3 after dropping Friday's matchup. Morant is putting up 20.8 points, 6.7 assists and 3.3 boards while shooting 40.6 percent from deep and 15.6 percent from deep.

The Grizzlies have a playoff-caliber roster with Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. leading the way, but the young squad goes only as far as Morant goes, and they'll need him and the coaching staff to get on the same page soon.
