Pacers' Obi Toppin to Undergo Foot Surgery, Out At Least 3 Months with Injury

The Indiana Pacers' injury woes became even worse Friday.

Indiana announced forward Obi Toppin suffered a partial stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot and will undergo surgery.

"Probably not recommend talking about this again until probably Feb. 1, [in] three months," head coach Rick Carlisle said, per ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk. "That's his situation."

Toppin suffered the injury during Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

He was averaging 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds while shooting 41.7 percent from the field and 17.6 percent from deep in the early going this season. He was also playing a career-high 27.3 minutes per game in part because of the depth problems.

The Pacers were already facing an uphill battle to remain on the short list of Eastern Conference contenders this season after reaching the 2025 NBA Finals because star point guard Tyrese Haliburton is sidelined for the year due to a torn Achilles.

Primary backup T.J. McConnell was also sidelined to start the season because of a left hamstring strain, but the injuries have continued to pile up through the first four games.

Bennedict Mathurin (right big toe sprain, week-to-week), Andrew Nembhard (left shoulder strain), Johnny Furphy (left foot bone bruise) and Kam Jones (lower back stress reaction) are also out with injuries.

Nembard, Mathurin and Toppin figured to be key pieces throughout the season as the Pacers looked to make up for the loss of Haliburton and Myles Turner, who joined the Milwaukee Bucks.

Now Indiana, which is 0-4 on the campaign, will have to go even deeper into its bench to tread water in the early going this season.

Toppin was a critical part of the team's second unit during the run to the NBA Finals last season. He finished with 20 points in a key Game 4 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round, 18 points in the closeout game of the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals and 17 or more points in three of the Finals games against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He poured in 20 points in the Game 6 win that forced the decisive Game 7 that Haliburton suffered his Achilles tear in to kickstart the unfortunate run of injuries for the Pacers.
