Victor Wembanyama Says Spurs' Historic 5-0 Start Is 'Not Random' After Win vs. Heat
Superstar center Victor Wembanyama expressed his belief Thursday night that the San Antonio Spurs' perfect 5-0 start isn't a fluke.
Speaking to reporters after the Spurs' 107-101 home win over the Miami Heat, Wemby said, "It feels great. It's not random. We didn't get those five wins randomly. We worked for it. We started this season strong, and we need to keep that streak going for as long as possible."
The Spurs are one of the most successful franchises in NBA history with five championships to their credit, but this marks their first-ever 5-0 start.
Wembanyama has been the driving force behind their success, as the 21-year-old big man is arguably the early NBA MVP front-runner with averages of 30.2 points, 14.6 rebounds, 4.8 blocks, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
The 7'4" Frenchman was at his best once again Thursday, leading the Spurs with 27 points on 10-of-23 shooting to go along with 18 boards, six assists and five blocks.
Wembanyama impacted the game in myriad ways, prompting six-time NBA All-Star Blake Griffin to make a jokingly obvious post on X about Wemby's dominance:
Selected first overall in the 2023 NBA draft, Wembanyama was highly productive over his first two seasons. He was named Rookie of the Year and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting in his debut campaign before securing his first All-Star selection last season.
Wembanyama was well on his way being named DPOY last season as well, but a blood clot in his shoulder ended his season after just 46 games.
For all of Wemby's individual success over his first two NBA seasons, the Spurs finished just 22-60 in 2023-24 and 34-48 in 2024-25, and they have not reached the playoffs since the 2018-19 season.
Given their hot start this season, it feels like San Antonio's six-year playoff drought could be poised to come to an end provided Wembanyama stays healthy.
Aside from Wembanyama, continued strong play from his supporting cast will be key, as Devin Vassell, reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and rookie No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper are all off to strong starts.
On top of that, one-time All-Star guard De'Aaron Fox hasn't even played yet due to a hamstring injury, and he should provide a boost once he returns.
Wembanyama and the Spurs will be back in action and look to make it 6-0 on Sunday when they go on the road to face the Phoenix Suns.
