Lakers' Contender Status Hinges on Upcoming Schedule Amid LeBron James Injury Rumors

Zach BuckleyOct 28, 2025

The difficulty level surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers' championship dreams for the 2025-26 NBA season was always going to be steep.

The Western Conference is fully loaded, their roster runs a little top-heavy and their personnel might struggle to support more than a league-average defense.

Still, the challenge grew even steeper when LeBron James started this season—his 23rd in the league (the most ever), mind you—on the sideline with sciatica. And while the rumor mill at least supplied some proverbial light at the end of the tunnel with his latest injury update, there's still a mountainous challenge standing between the club and that point.

Let's start with the positive news, though. According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, "we're still in the range of about three more weeks before [James] would be targeting a return sometime in mid-November." The reporter added hearing that James' rehab process "is moving in the right direction."

That is, relatively speaking, an encouraging update. It's not immediate relief, obviously, but the Lakers (and James himself) clearly don't want to rush this. They'd rather err on the side of caution then risk him coming back too soon.

Still, that doesn't make the prospect of continuing to play without him any easier. Especially not with the challenging schedule they'll soon face.

Let's assume mid-November means exactly that. The Lakers play on Nov. 15 and then return to action on Nov. 18. If James misses the former and returns for the latter, that means L.A. would play another 10 games without him.

Eight of those contests will be on the road, including a five-game trek that would close out this stretch. Half will come against teams that were playoff participants last season, including the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder and the Western Conference finalist Minnesota Timberwolves.

And not included in that group are a few clubs holding realistic hopes of joining the postseason party this time around.

Like the Atlanta Hawks, who beefed up their roster by adding Kristaps Porziņģis and Nickeil Alexander-Walker over the offseason. And the San Antonio Spurs, who sure look like they have an MVP candidate in rising superstar Victor Wembanyama.

It's a tricky road ahead, particularly when Luka Dončić will miss at least the early portion of it, too. The Lakers better hope Austin Reaves has more magical outings in him, because their injury-riddled roster doesn't have many other places to turn for offenses right now.

Granted, L.A.'s biggest goals have seemingly nothing to do with the end of October and beginning of November, but every game counts in what figures to be a furious fight in the Western Conference standings. The Lakers can't afford to give up too much ground, because they don't need the extra burden of asking their roster to play catch-up.

While it's obviously way too early to start scoreboard watching, it still might be worth noting that the conference has claimed five of the top seven spots in scoring differential. And that doesn't include presumed heavyweights like the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks.

The West is, objectively speaking, wholly ridiculous. It will take a great (and fortunate) team to conquer it.

So far, the Lakers have been dealt a difficult hand. And while they clearly hope this trend relents sooner than later, they still have to play this hand as best they can.

It was always going to be a long, daunting road to the title for this L.A. team. Its ability to successfully navigate this precarious stretch ahead could quietly go a long way toward determining just how realistic it is for the Purple and Gold to pull this off.
