Gregg Popovich Honored by Spurs With Banner After Hall of Fame HC Career
Legendary head coach Gregg Popovich didn't get a retirement tour during his final season with the San Antonio Spurs, but the team honored him with a new banner recently.
The organization put Popovich's name alongside many of the star players who played under him in San Antonio.
According to ESPN, fans saw the banner for the first time during San Antonio's home opener against the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday. The team did not hold a public ceremony.
"Very Pop-esque," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "Obviously, what an honor to have him included with that group. Can't say enough in terms of 29 years as the head coach, longer with the organization, five championships.
"Everything that you see here or have heard regarding this organization, he has his handprints all over it. Just the amount of dedication, time and energy he put into so many things that [are] never for public consumption or are even known by people in the organization -- the players, the importance of everything, how we do everything, the attention to detail, the consistency, the love, blood sweat and tears we put into it."
Popovich coached the Spurs from 1996 until last season, leading San Antonio to five championships, the most recent of which came in 2014. He coached a number of Hall of Famers, including Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker and more. He is the NBA's all-time leader in coaching wins.
In May, Popovich announced that he would step down as the Spurs' head coach, ending his 29-year run at the helm. The end of his coaching career came after he had to miss most of the 2024-25 campaign following a stroke last November.
Popovich's time leading the Spurs dynasty may be over, but he'll now forever have a place in the house he helped build.
