Bryce Harper 'Hurt' by Phillies Trade Rumors, 'I Have Given My All to Philly'
Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski raised some eyebrows last week when he suggested that Bryce Harper didn't have an elite 2025 season and wondered if he would be able to produce another one in the future.
Whether that was meant as a challenge or not, it kicked off some trade rumors surrounding the superstar first baseman, which "hurt" Harper.
"I have given my all to Philly from the start," he told The Athletic's Matt Gelb. "Now there is trade talk? I made every effort to avoid this. It's all I heard in D.C. (with the Nationals). I hated it. It makes me feel uncomfortable."

"From changing positions to coming back early from injury, I show total commitment for my team," he added. "And yet there is still trade talk."
Jon Heyman of the New York Post added that Harper was "pissed off" after Dombrowski's comments.
"He's still a quality player," Dombrowski said in his original remarks. "He's still an All-Star-caliber player. He didn't have an elite season like he has had in the past. And I guess we only find out if he becomes elite or he continues to be good. If you look around the league, I think... Freddie Freeman: He's a really good player, right? He still is a good player. Is he elite like he was before? Probably not to the same extent. Freddie is a tremendous player, and that, to me, is Bryce. Can he rise to the next level again? I don't really know that answer. He's the one that will dictate that more than anything else. I don't think he's content with the year that he had. And again, it wasn't a bad year. But when you think of Bryce Harper, you think of elite, right? You think of one of the top 10 players in baseball, and I don't think it fit into that category. But again, a very good player. I've seen guys at his age—again, he's not old—that level off. Or I've seen guys rise again."
Dombrowski later clarified his comments and denied any trade rumors involving Harper:
Harper, 33, hit .261 in 2025 with 27 homers, 75 RBI, 72 runs, 12 stolen bases and a .844 OPS in 132 games. It was undoubtedly a down year in overall production for the two-time MVP, though Harper was quick to note it was partially due to a number of games missed with a wrist issue.
"All players get hurt," he told Gelb. "I hurt my wrist this year and missed a month. Of course I don't have full-year numbers. It's disappointing to hear me being questioned about my contribution to the team. Just really hurt by that notion because I love Philly so much."
Harper's agent, Scott Boras, made another fair point regarding his production—he doesn't see a ton of pitches to hit.
"Give Bryce Harper more pitches to hit and the metrics speak that all that they want will be delivered," he told reporters. "Because the metrics are clearly there that he's among the top in the game. He continues to be. All that data says that. The only issue that I was surprised by is that Dave did not say that Bryce Harper missed a month of the season, and therefore his numbers volume-wise weren't there. But Bryce Harper being Bryce Harper is a talent, and how they can improve is that he's got to get more pitches to hit."
As Todd Zolecki of MLB.com noted, Harper "saw pitches in the zone only 43 percent of time, the fewest out of 532 players (minimum 200 pitches)," and added that the team's cleanup hitters combined to post a .720 OPS on the season, which was just 20th in baseball.
Leadoff hitter Trea Turner, on the other hand, had Kyle Schwarber protecting him, while Schwarber had Harper behind him. But the Phillies rotated through a number of options at cleanup, and none of them struck much fear in opposing pitchers.
The Phillies have some work to do this offseason after falling short in the postseason yet again. One of the goals should be getting Harper some protection in the lineup. Restoring their relationship with the face of the franchise has suddenly become a priority as well.
