Why Giants' Skattebo, Daboll Were Fined After Review of Jaxson Dart Concussion Check

Mike ChiariOct 24, 2025

The NFL announced Friday that New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo and head coach Brian Daboll were fined for violating protocol while quarterback Jaxson Dart was being evaluated for a concussion during the team's Week 6 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

In a statement released by the league, it was noted that Skattebo was fined $15,000 and Daboll was fined $100,000, while the Giants organization was fined $200,000.

The league determined that both Skattebo and Daboll broke league rules when they entered the blue medical tent while Dart was going through concussion protocol.

While the NFL concluded that Skattebo and Daboll "had no actual impact on the exam or the care" that Dart received, it was still established that their actions "demonstrated a disregard for the concussion protocol's requirements."

During the Giants' 34-17 upset of the Eagles on Oct. 9, Dart had to be evaluated for a concussion at one point. After missing two plays, he returned to the game during New York's next offensive possession.

Prime Video cameras captured Skattebo entering the medical tent and Daboll poking his head inside. Daboll was also seen yelling at a team doctor.

While speaking to reporters after the game, Daboll expressed regret over how he handled the situation, saying:

"If you've ever been on an NFL sideline, there's a lot of emotions. There's a lot of emotions. And I certainly am an emotional guy. I apologized directly to our team physician. I just wanted his ass out there if he was OK. But I wanted the process—like, we were getting ready to go for it on a potential fourth down. I would have burned a timeout if he could have came out there. So I was asking how long is it gonna take?

"So, again, you want your guy out there, not at risk of anything else. But, you know, he came out. 'I think he's gonna be good.' I'm like, 'Is he gonna be good or not? I'm gonna call a timeout on fourth down and go for this son of a b---h.' You know what I mean? So, I love our doctors. ... I apologize. I was in the wrong."

Giants president and CEO John Mara also released a statement, noting that Daboll "understands that the appearance of going to the tent is inappropriate."

Mara also said the Giants would "fully cooperate" with the NFL's investigation into whether concussion protocol was violated.

The game against Philadelphia marked Dart's third career start, and he was under center once again for the Giants' 33-32 loss to the Denver Broncos last weekend.

Although the Giants are only 2-2 with Dart as the starter, he has brought a sense of excitement and hope to a franchise that was struggling.

The rookie first-round pick is completing 60.2 percent of his passes for 791 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions, while also rushing for 178 yards and three scores.

Skattebo has breathed new life into the offense as well, rushing for 398 yards and five touchdowns and catching 23 passes for 189 yards and a score.

The 2-5 Giants will look to get back in the win column Sunday when they go on the road to face the Eagles for the second time this season.
