Jets' Glenn Reacts to Woody Johnson's Justin Fields Comments, Declines to Name QB1

Adam WellsOct 22, 2025

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn might know who will be starting at quarterback in Week 8, but he isn't ready to offer that information to the public.

Glenn told reporters he won't name either Justin Fields or Tyrod Taylor as the starter for Sunday's game to avoid giving "a competitive advantage" to the Cincinnati Bengals.

In addition to playing things close to the vest with his quarterback situation, Glenn also got into a back-and-forth with a reporter about Jets owner Woody Johnson's comments about Fields' struggles and if that has any bearing on the decision of who will start this week.

Johnson specifically citing Fields' accuracy struggles was particularly damning about how far the former first-round draft pick has fallen.

"If we could just complete a pass, it would look good," said Johnson.

Glenn's response today indicates there hasn't been any edict from above to make a change at quarterback. The Jets coach did note that Taylor is day-to-day with a knee injury, but that's not a new issue after the quarterback had his knee scoped during training camp.

Fields was benched at halftime of New York's 13-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 7. He went 6-of-12 for 46 yards through the first two quarters of that game after throwing for 45 yards in the previous week against the Denver Broncos.

Taylor didn't fare much better than Fields when he got on the field. The 36-year-old finished 10-of-22 for 126 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions against the Panthers.

The Jets did use Taylor as their starter in Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when Fields was out due to a concussion. He was fine in that game, completing 26 of 36 attempts for 197 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Glenn is looking for anything that can provide a spark on offense at this point. The Jets have scored a total of 97 points in six games since that impressive Week 1 showing against the Pittsburgh Steelers when they dropped 32 points and ran for 182 yards.

The Jets are the NFL's lone remaining winless team with an 0-7 record. They are 3-18 in their last 21 games after starting 2-1 last season.
