Justin Fields Reportedly to Be Benched for Tyrod Taylor for Jets vs. Bengals in Week 8

The New York Jets are reportedly expected to bench quarterback Justin Fields in favor of Tyrod Taylor for their road game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Jets owner Woody Johnson said the starting quarterback choice is "completely up to the coach," and head coach Aaron Glenn is "moving toward" naming Taylor the starter.

During this past weekend's 13-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers, Glenn benched Fields coming out of halftime after he went just 6-of-12 for 46 yards in the first half.

New York is the only remaining winless team this season, and inconsistent quarterback play is among the biggest reasons for the team's 0-7 start.

Fields has started six of the Jets' seven games, completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 845 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He has also rushed for 257 yards and three scores.

Although Fields has yet to throw a pick, he has lost two fumbles and gotten sacked 22 times, which is tied for the second-most sacks taken in the league behind only Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward.

Since throwing for 200 or more yards and at least one touchdown in three of his first four starts this season, Fields has struggled mightily over his past two outings.

In a 13-11 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 6, Fields went 9-of-17 for 45 yards with no touchdowns, and he was sacked nine times.

Fields wasn't much better in Week 7 against the Panthers before Glenn decided to replace him with Taylor.

The 36-year-old Taylor is in the midst of his 15th NFL season, having previously played for the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and New York Giants.

Taylor has a career record of 28-29-1 as a starter, and he is best known for his three-year stint in Buffalo from 2015 to 2017, which saw him earn a Pro Bowl selection in 2015 and a playoff berth in 2017.

In Taylor's only start so far this season, which was a 29-27 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3, he went 26-of-36 for 197 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while also rushing for 29 yards.

Playing in relief of Fields against Carolina, Taylor went 10-of-22 for 126 yards with no touchdowns and two picks.

The Jets will play a revitalized Bengals team in Week 8, as recently acquired quarterback Joe Flacco led them to an upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers last week.
