Russell Westbrook Posts 'Light the Beam' After Signing Kings Contract in NBA FA

Russell Westbrook posted the Sacramento Kings' rallying cry, "Light the Beam," on his social media Thursday after signing a one-year, $3.6 million minimum-salary deal on Wednesday.

Westbrook is expected to come off the bench for the Kings as a backup point guard in more of a sixth man role.

While Westbrook will add some needed depth, the Kings have a fairly wonky roster in general.

The pairing of Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan only led the Chicago Bulls to the playoffs once and didn't win a playoff series together, and little has changed in Sacramento. Domantas Sabonis is a nightly double-double, but it's fair to question if the team has the shooting around him to space the floor.

Keegan Murray took a step back in the 2024-25 season after a promising first two years. Malik Monk was a fantastic sixth man and remains a solid option at shooting guard. Dennis Schröder was the team's main addition this offseason, with the hope that the well-traveled veteran will aptly handle point-guard duties after De'Aaron Fox was traded last season.

There's a lot of players who can put the ball in the hoop here, but only one ball, and major questions about whether all of these pieces actually fit. Having depth will be helpful early in the season, with Murray recovering from a torn UCL in his left thumb and Sabonis recently picking up a hamstring injury.

But how this all blends once the Kings are full strength is a major question and a major concern. Westbrook doesn't really alleviate them.

The 36-year-old averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game for the Denver Nuggets last year, largely in a role off the bench, but he also frustrated at times with his decision-making and turnovers (3.2 TPG). He's yet another player for the Kings who is at his best with the ball in his hands.

There is talent in Sacramento, there's no two ways about that, but everything hinges on whether there will be chemistry.
