Alcaraz vs. Sinner
Recap
Alcaraz and Sinner have combined to win the last eight Grand Slam titles and have faced each other in the last three finals, so it was hardly a shock that either man won both of their matches in straight sets to set up a showdown for the $6 million payout that is awarded to the winner.
The two also faced off in last year's final at this event, with Sinner winning that matchup.
Neither player was particularly bothered on Thursday. Sinner claimed his sixth straight victory over Nadal with relative dominance, while Alcaraz claimed his fifth win in six tries against Fritz in equally comfortable fashion.
The exhibition event, streaming on Netflix, has been somewhat controversial given its host country, Saudi Arabia, has been accused of sportswashing its human-rights violations through a number of sporting events and club purchases in recent years.
A number of players, including Alcarez, have also criticized the ATP and WTA's busy schedule, complaining of burnout, only for some to turn around and play an exhibition tournament in October.
Given the massive prize money on the line, however—no ATP or WTA event has such a lucrative winner's payout, with the U.S. Open ($5 million) coming the closest—it wasn't a shock that a number of players are participating.
