Boston Seeking Power Bats
1 of 2
The Boston Red Sox tallied just one home run in three Wild Card round games against the rival New York Yankees, and this off-season, they will be looking to upgrade the power in their lineup, per MLB.com's Ian Brown.
Two such players to keep an eye on, according to Brown, are Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso.
They are the two elite power hitters available, so it is not surprise their names would come up. Schwarber had an MVP-caliber season at the plate, blasting 56 home runs and driving in a career-high 132 runs.
Alonso hit 38 homers of his own and added 126 RBI while establishing a career-best .272 average.
Schwarber and the Philadelphia Phillies advanced to the NLDS this season, losing Game 4 to the Dodgers Thursday night on an improbable throwing error by reliever Orion Kerkering. Alonso and the New York Mets completed a disastrous second-half of the season by falling 4-0 to the Miami Marlins and missing the postseason completely.
Both players have expressed their desire to remain with their current teams, but recent criticisms of Alonso's defensive throwing and scouts suggesting he needs to move to the DH position and give up first base may be a deal-breaker for the former Florida Gator.
If so, the two-time Home Run Derby champion feels like the most likely of the two to depart and continue his career elsewhere. Like Boston.
Prediction: Schwarber returns to Philadelphia, Alonso leaves New York and lands in Boston or San Francisco
What's Next for Philadelphia?
2 of 2
On the heels of the aforementioned devastating defeat Thursday night in Los Angeles, there are plenty of questions about the future of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Designated hitter Schwarber, catcher JT Realmuto, and starting pitcher Ranger Suárez are all free agents, while Harrison Bader possesses a mutual option and José Alvarado has a club option.
MLB writer Todd Zolecki reported that "not everybody will be back."
Realmuto has been with the team since 2019 and is beloved by fans and teammates alike.
Schwarber is equally popular, and Bader was one of the hottest hitters in the game since arriving in Philadelphia.
He told Zolecki after the game, "I'm thinking about losing a baseball game. That's what it feels like right now. The last thing I'm thinking about is next year. If you want to ask me about this series or my teammates, let's do that. I haven't thought about next year."
Suárez had an up-and-down season at the mound, but compiled a 12-8 record, 3.20 average, and 151 strikeouts, strong enough numbers to consider bringing him back.
Alvarado made 28 appearances in 2025, with a 3.81 average and 4-2 record.
It remains to be seen who is allowed to walk, and if the organization is willing to pay Schwarber the enormous contract he is going to fetch this off-season on the heels of the most explosive hitting campaign of his career, but one this is for certain: the Phillies, as fans have known them for the last few years, will look different in 2026.
Bader, the newest on the squad, would seemingly be the most expendable but he was a clubhouse fit and established a .305/.361/.463 slash line with the team. It would be interesting what he could accomplish in a full year with the organization.
Suárez is too valuable and his return may be dictated by his asking price.
As beloved as Realmuto is, and as strong a middle reliever as Alvarado is when he is at his best, they may be the two players most likely to be playing elsewhere.
Prediction: Realmuto, Alvarado sign elsewhere while Schwarber, Suarez, and Bader return
