Quentin Grimes Has No Hard Feelings Toward 76ers Over Contract Negotiations
Former restricted free agent wing Quentin Grimes signed a one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer to remain with the Philadelphia 76ers this year and enter unrestricted free agency next season.
Negotiations between the two sides on a multi-year deal never went anywhere, per ESPN's Shams Charania, but Grimes doesn't have any hard feelings toward the team about a suitable contract failing to transpire.
Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer relayed Grimes' remarks on Wednesday.
The Dallas Mavericks traded Grimes and a 2025 second-round draft pick to the 76ers for Caleb Martin last February. Grimes was given an opportunity to shine in Philadelphia with the team dealing with a host of injuries, including ailments to Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey.
Grimes made the most of his chances, averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 28 games (25 starts) for Philadelphia. He scored 30 or more points on five occasions, including 44 in a 126-119 win over the Golden State Warriors and a career-high 46 (alongside 13 rebounds) in a 144-137 overtime loss to the Houston Rockets.
Grimes has earned himself a role in this year's starting lineup. It's unlikely he'll have as many chances to dominate the scoresheet with the returns of Philadelphia's big three, but he'll certainly be called upon at the wing, especially with Jared McCain set to miss some time with a torn UCL in his right thumb.
Still, this season gives Grimes the opportunity to get a lucrative, multi-year deal. It would be a major win for a player who largely came off the bench over his first three-plus seasons with the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons and Mavs before excelling in Philadelphia.
