Are Trevor Lawrence and the Jags Finally Realizing Their Potential?

Moe MotonOct 7, 2025

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a statement loud and clear in their Monday Night Football win over the Kansas City Chiefs: They have entered the AFC contender chat.

The Jaguars erased a 14-point deficit, made the Chiefs pay for Patrick Mahomes' costly turnover and won the game in dramatic fashion with Trevor Lawrence stumbling into the end zone.

Jacksonville didn't play its best game to beat Kansas City, but the club possesses an aggressive, no-fear attitude that could push it through adversity and into the playoffs.

Even at 4-1, the Jaguars are just scratching the surface of their true potential as a threat in the AFC.

Here's why Jacksonville could continue to make strides throughout the 2025 season.

Liam Coen Brings New Energy to Surging Jaguars

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen

You never know how a first-time head coach will adjust to a bigger role. Some coordinators and position coaches are well-suited for the job, while others struggle from the start.

Liam Coen's fifth-ranked ground attack, featuring Travis Etienne Jr. and Bhayshul Tuten, presents a sense of toughness, though his offensive expertise isn't the only element he brings to the Jaguars locker room.

The head coach displayed a feisty demeanor when San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh accused him of "legal sign stealing" before their Week 4 matchup.

While Coen's postgame confrontation appears to be a verbal dust-up between competitive coaches, his approach could also send a message to the locker room—that this team won't back down from anyone.

The Jaguars have beaten the 49ers and Chiefs in back-to-back weeks, a perennial playoff contender and a franchise in dynasty mode.

Jacksonville is 4-1 for the first time since 2007, and the team plays with confidence under an innovative lead skipper who's not afraid to get in an opponent's face.

Trevor Lawrence Isn't Playing at His Peak Yet

In 2022, quarterback Trevor Lawrence performed at a Pro Bowl level, throwing for 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions. In that campaign, he led the Jaguars to the playoffs and completed an epic comeback against the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC Wild Card Round.

The 26-year-old hasn't been able to match that year in terms of his passing numbers, and he's turned the ball over at an alarming rate. Former Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson called him out for his carelessness with the ball.

Liam Coen must figure out a way to help his quarterback cut down on turnovers. Lawrence ranks fourth in interceptions with five, behind Geno Smith (nine), Jake Browning (eight) and Joe Flacco (six). He's also fumbled twice and lost one of them.

Yet the Clemson product has engineered two game-winning drives. Against the Chiefs, he stumbled out of the pocket and made something out of nothing for the go-ahead score.

Lawrence may not play up to transcendent talent expectations, but the fifth-year signal-caller can play better than what we've seen through the first five weeks.

If Coen gets the best out of him, the Jaguars offense will make exponential leaps and bounds.

Jaguars' Young Wide Receiver Duo Has Room to Grow

Travis Hunter (12) and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. (7)

During this year's draft, the Jaguars made an aggressive move for Travis Hunter, a two-way player out of Colorado who can line up at wide receiver and cornerback.

Jacksonville hasn't seen a strong early return on its investment in Hunter. He's hauled in 16 of his 24 targets for 182 scoreless yards and logged two pass breakups. His numbers are ordinary rather than impressive, but he flashed his potential against the Chiefs.

Hunter recorded a 44-yard reception that set up the Jaguars for a touchdown to tie the game in the third quarter. He also went stride for stride with speedy wide receiver Xavier Worthy when Kansas City attempted to stretch Jacksonville's 27th-ranked pass defense with the deep ball.

If Hunter breaks out, he'll provide more explosive plays in the passing game and force more turnovers for a defense that leads the league in takeaways.

Like Hunter, Brian Thomas Jr. is off to a sluggish start to the season, but he had his best game in the Jaguars' victory over the Chiefs. He caught four passes for 80 yards.

Coming off a Pro Bowl year, the 23-year-old posted average stat lines through the first four weeks of the campaign. Head coach Liam Coen revealed that the receiver battled a wrist injury in September.

If Thomas' previous outing is an indication of what's to come, the Jaguars will field a dynamic receiver duo with him and Hunter on the perimeter.

Jacksonville's Defense Feasting on Opponents' Miscues

Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd

The Jaguars lead the league in takeaways with 14. They forced multiple turnovers in four out of their five contests. The Chiefs only turned the ball over once, but it was a costly one—a pick-six near the goal line that shifted the momentum of the game.

Patrick Mahomes made an uncharacteristic mistake in a critical situation, though Devin Lloyd deserves credit for turning a giveaway into a score.

The linebacker didn't make a fluke play because he just happened to be in the right place at the right time. As the league's leader in interceptions with four, he's developed a knack for making game-changing plays through five weeks.

Lloyd isn't the only player in the Jacksonville defense who gets his hands on the ball. Cornerback Jourdan Lewis has two interceptions and leads the club in pass breakups with seven. Six different Jaguars defenders have at least one interception.

Defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile injects a see-ball-get-ball mentality into his unit.

Campanile's defense has given Liam Coen's offense more opportunities to put points on the board, which is why the Jaguars' inefficient offense is still one of the league's highest-scoring units.

Jacksonville Is a Legit Contender to Win the AFC South

Like the Washington Commanders last year, the Jaguars can make a leap from a 4-13 campaign to a double-digit win season with playoff victories. Additionally, they have a chance to claim a division title.

The Houston Texans offense made strides over the last couple of weeks, though they're still under .500. Keep in mind that Jacksonville beat Houston in Week 3.

Jacksonville's matchups with the Indianapolis Colts will draw intrigue, as both clubs have exceeded early expectations. The quarterback who makes fewer mistakes could be the difference in those games.

In Week 5, the Tennessee Titans earned their first win of the season. They're rebuilding around rookie quarterback Cam Ward and will likely finish at the bottom of the division.

While we can't count out the Texans, who have won the AFC South title in consecutive years with C.J. Stroud under center, the Jaguars can gain a strong upper hand if they sweep the season series with them in Week 10.

By December, Jacksonville and Indianapolis could be battling for the division lead with matchups in Weeks 14 and 17.
