Lakers' Austin Reaves Jokes About Talking Grandmother Out of Confronting LeBron James

Austin Reaves' grandmother apparently isn't happy with how Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has been arguing with her grandson on the court.

"My grandma, one day, was so mad at him," Reaves said about James at the 1:12:30 mark of Thursday's Young Man and the Three podcast. "She was like, 'If he yells at you like that one more time...' I was like, 'Mamaw, it's okay.'"

Reaves added that he feels he can push back against James if he disagrees with what the Lakers star is telling him on the court.

"That's also a good thing about him. You can go back at him," Reaves said.

Reaves went on to tell a story that took place during his first season with the Lakers in 2021-22, when James confronted him about what he believed had been a mistake by the undrafted rookie.

Reaves responded by getting an iPad from the bench, finding the play, and showing James there was no mistake on the play.

"He was like, 'Oh, that's my bad, my mistake,'" Reaves said. "So you can go back at him. We've had a couple instances of where we've went at each other."

The Lakers are set to open the preseason against the Phoenix Suns on Friday night, although Reaves will have to wait longer than that to resume playing alongside his star teammates. James is currently sidelined with a nerve issue in his glute, while Luka Dončić will be resting for at least the first two games of the preseason.

Reaves may meanwhile be seeing limited minutes if he's in the lineup for Friday's 10 p.m. ET tip-off. Lakers head coach JJ Redick previously said the Lakers plan to be "sensitive" with how much Reaves plays after giving him the "highest workload in camp."
