Jonathan Kuminga Switches to No. 1 Warriors Jersey After Signing $48.5M Contract
Jonathan Kuminga is back with the Golden State Warriors this season, but he is going to have a different look when he takes the court.
That is because he will wear No. 1 instead of the familiar No. 00 he donned during his first four seasons. ESPN's Anthony Slater reported the number change after the forward finished his first practice of the preseason on Thursday.
No member of the Warriors made more offseason headlines than Kuminga given the overall uncertainty about whether he would be back with the only NBA team he has ever known.
After sign-and-trade speculation, discussions about the qualifying offer and plenty of rumors, he eventually agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million contract that features "a team option designed for the contract to be ripped up and renegotiated next summer," per ESPN's Shams Charania.
That means his time with the Warriors might still be short-lived, as Charania reported he accepted that deal instead of the three-year, $75 million one Golden State also offered "so he can maintain a higher level of control over his immediate future."
Ultimately, the Warriors could also look to trade him during the season as well, but he is a member of the Western Conference team for now and will have a different number.
Perhaps the fresh look will help him establish more of a consistent role after he was in and out of the team's rotation by the end of last season. There is no doubting his overall talent and ability to impact the game, but he is also 22 years old and something of an awkward fit timeline-wise for a veteran-laden Warriors team.
Kuminga also needs to improve his outside shooting after hitting 30.5 percent of his triples last season.
That could determine how much playing time he eventually sees while wearing No. 1.
