
Gael Monfils to Retire from Tennis After 2026 Season, 'I am Tremendously at Peace'
Gael Monfils' career is coming to an end after the 2026 ATP season.
In a post on X, Monfils announced the upcoming season will be his last as a professionl and "I am tremendously at peace" with the decision.
Monfils, who celebrated his 39th birthday on Sept. 1, turned pro in 2004 at the age of 17. His first win in an ATP Tour match was at the Open de Moselle in October 2004.
Ten months later, Monfils won his first ATP singles tournament by defeating Florian Mayer at the Idea Prokom Open.
Monfils has gone on to win a total of 13 singles titles. His most recent victory was in January at the ASB Classic to become theĀ oldest men's playerĀ to win a singles event since 1977.
"[My first title] was 20 years ago. I still have the passion to play tennis. I feel I [can] still strike the ball very well. Hopefully, many more to come," Monfils said after the historic win.
During the 2016 season, Monfils reached a career-high No. 6 ranking in the ATP world rankings. That was the same season he made it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and semifinals of the U.S. Open.
Monfils advanced to nine quarterfinals in Grand Slam tournaments. His best finish in the four major events was in the semifinals at the 2016 U.S. Open and 2008 French Open.
The 2026 ATP schedule features a total of 59 tournaments, not including the four Grand Slam events.
