Victor Wembanyama Injury Update, Latest News on Spurs Star and Timeline to Return
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama suffered a slight hyperextension in his left knee during Wednesday's contest against the New York Knicks, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
An MRI on Thursday "showed no ligament damage," according to Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News.
Wembanyama has been ruled out for Friday night's game against the Indiana Pacers. According to ESPN's Michael C. Wright, he's day-to-day with left knee soreness.
Wembanyama's health was a major storyline coming into the 2025-26 campaign, as he was limited to just 46 games last season because of deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder.
What's more, he missed 12 games in November and December because of a strained left calf.
While the Spurs have a talented supporting cast and aspirations for a deep playoff run, having a healthy Wembanyama is the most important thing for their chances to deliver on those expectations.
After all, he is one of the best players in the NBA when on the floor. He led the league in blocks per game in each of his first two seasons and is a double-double machine who can take over as an offensive threat on the blocks or perimeter, dominant defender, and overpowering rebounder.
Wembanyama is averaging 24 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3 blocks and 0.9 steals per game this season.
While San Antonio doesn't have anyone who can realistically replicate Wembanyama's impact, it will likely turn toward a couple of veterans in the frontcourt until he is ready to return.
Look for Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk to see more playing time without the team's star player.
