How Al Horford Impacts Jonathan Kuminga, Warriors Contract Talks amid NBA Trade Rumors
While the Golden State Warriors are still in contract talks with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, they reportedly finalized an agreement with one of their top offseason targets.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Sunday that veteran center Al Horford has committed to a multi-year deal with the Warriors.
However, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints noted that the Warriors are still in the process of negotiating with Kuminga, so Horford's signing won't become official until a decision is made by the young forward on a multiyear deal or the qualifying offer from Golden State.
Kuminga has until Wednesday to accept the $7.9 million qualifying offer for the 2025-26 season, which would make him an unrestricted free agent next summer. NBA insider Jake Fischer recently reported that the Warriors' most recent contract offers to the 22-year-old are for three years and $75 million or two years and $45 million, with both deals including a team option in the final year.
While there was speculation earlier this offseason that Kuminga would be a sign-and-trade candidate, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reported on Saturday that "any chances of a sign-and-trade are virtually over."
Horford is one of the multiple free agents who have been waiting for a resolution with Kuminga's contract situation to sign with Golden State. NBA insider Marc Stein reported earlier this month that Seth Curry, Gary Payton II and De'Anthony Melton are also set to sign with the Warriors once the Kuminga saga ends.
Golden State is set to hold media day on Monday, and Kuminga will surely be a hot topic. Training camp is set to begin on Tuesday, and there's no indication that the youngster will be in attendance.
Still, Horford's agreement indicates that this will all be resolved soon, as this week's deadline will determine Kuminga's place with the Warriors going forward.
