Heat Reportedly Had Interest in Mo Bamba Before Precious Achiuwa Contract in NBA FA
The Miami Heat reportedly flirted with the idea of signing center Mo Bamba in free agency before going in a different direction.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Heat "showed interest" in Bamba, but they ultimately decided to sign center Precious Achiuwa this week.
Bamba didn't have to wait much longer to find a home, though, as the Utah Jazz signed him Thursday.
The 27-year-old Bamba was originally selected sixth overall in the 2018 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic following one highly productive collegiate season at the University of Texas.
While hopes were high for Bamba to be a difference-maker, it never materialized, and he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers after parts of five seasons in Orlando.
His best season to date remains the 2021-22 campaign by far when Bamba averaged a career-high 10.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.
Since the trade to the Lakers, Bamba has also played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers and New Orleans Pelicans.
In 32 games last season split between the Clips and Pels, the 7-footer averaged 4.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.0 block in 12.9 minutes per contest.
As for Achiuwa, he is reunited with the team that selected him 20th overall in the 2020 NBA draft.
The 26-year-old from Nigeria spent only one season in Miami during his first stint with the team before getting traded to the Toronto Raptors as part of the deal for guard Kyle Lowry.
After parts of three seasons in Toronto, Achiuwa spent parts of the past two seasons with the New York Knicks.
Last season, Achiuwa averaged 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in 57 appearances for the Knicks. He had a career-high 9.2 points per game in 2022-23 and 6.6 rebounds per game in 2023-24.
Achiuwa will provide frontcourt depth behind Bam Adebayo and Kel'el Ware in Miami, while Bamba will do the same for Walker Kessler, Lauri Markkanen and Kyle Filipowski in Utah.
Both the Heat and Jazz will open the regular season on Oct. 22 with Miami going on the road to face the Magic and Utah hosting the Clippers.
