Quentin Grimes, 76ers Reportedly 'Very Far Apart' on New Contract amid NBA Rumors
The NBA season is nearing, but the 76ers reportedly aren't close to signing a key restricted free agent.
Per ESPN's Shams Charania, the 76ers and Quentin Grimes "are very far apart on a deal." Charania added that Grimes will not attend Philadelphia's media day this week, and won't travel to Abu Dhabi this weekend for the team's preseason game.
"I'm told both of these sides are very far apart on a deal," Charania said on NBA Today. "Quentin Grimes' agent, David Bauman, told me today that it was the first time today that the Sixers made a formal, hard offer to Grimes as a restricted free agent."

Grimes, 25, is coming off the best stretch of his career. After being traded to the Sixers from the Dallas Mavericks, the shooting guard averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
While Grimes looked like the best version of himself then, it's a small sample size, and perhaps not enough for Philadelphia to commit to giving him a big contract.
Charania also noted that the 76ers' drafting VJ Edgecombe, plus Philadelphia's recent injury history, could be a factor as well.
"From the 76ers' side of this, getting VJ Edgecombe in the high lottery, obviously that changes the dynamic of their backcourt," Charania said. "And there is a level of uncertainty this year health-wise with key players like Joel Embiid, Paul George, and where does that leave the 76ers in terms of offering those high-value, high multi-year deals."
Charania explained that there are likely three options for Grimes at this point. The first would be for him to sign an $8.6 million qualifying offer to stay with the team, the second would be a sign-and-trade and the third would be a one-year deal worth more than the qualifying offer.
Based on those three scenarios, it seems like Grimes won't be getting a long-term deal with the 76ers.
One thing to consider with Grimes' restricted free agent status is that he can sign with another squad, but any offer he gets, the 76ers have the chance to match it.
