Malcolm Brogdon Reportedly Expected to Have 'Key Bench Role' for Knicks amid Rumors

Andrew PetersSep 23, 2025

Malcolm Brogdon has transitioned into a role off the bench over the past few seasons, and it appears he'll keep that same role as a member of the New York Knicks.

"Brodgon, I'm told he's expected to play a key bench role in the rotation," ESPN's Shams Charania said on NBA Today.

Brogdon signed a one-year, non-guaranteed deal with the Knicks earlier this month, but he's reportedly still competing for a roster spot. After Brogdon signed with New York, SNY's Ian Begley noted that Brogdon will compete with Landry Shamet for the backup point guard role.

Charania noted that Brogdon and Shamet signed deals "with the intent and the plan for them both to be on the roster on opening night" and are "expected to be on" the team.

NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Knicks "have begun to weigh various trade scenarios" to create enough space under the second apron to keep both players on the roster.

Brogdon, the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year, has been limited by injuries recently, playing just 63 games over the last two seasons. In 24 contests last year, he put up 12.7 points, 4.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game for the Washington Wizards.
