LeBron James' Future Predicted by Insiders amid Lakers, NBA Retirement Rumors

Scott PolacekSep 22, 2025

LeBron James is 40 years old, entering the final season of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers and still playing at a high level. There is no consensus about what the future holds for the King, including from NBA insiders.

On Monday, ESPN's Tim Bontemps shared the results of a poll of 20 coaches, scouts and executives that included the question "Where will LeBron James be at the start of the 2026-27 season?"

Here are the results:

James' future has been a major discussion point this offseason, especially since the Lakers seem to be moving toward building around Luka Dončić after giving the latter a contract extension.

James' agent, Rich Paul, also brought additional attention to the situation in June with comments he made to ESPN's Shams Charania.

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.

"... We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

Trade speculation has largely quieted as the offseason progressed, but the variety in the answers from the insiders indicates that nobody truly knows what is going to happen. How he plays during the 2025-26 season after turning 41 years old in December will likely also play a role in his eventual decision.

Joining the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat would mean homecomings to the other two teams he played for earlier in his career, while the Golden State Warriors would mean teaming up with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green and going for another ring before retirement.

Golden State would be quite the full-circle moment for James as well since he faced the Warriors in in four straight NBA Finals when he was a member of the Cavaliers.

If he went to the Dallas Mavericks, that would mean being teammates with Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving again before the end of his career.

It isn't difficult to envision any of those scenarios, but one insider said, "If I was taking the Lakers or the field, I'd take the field. But I'll take the Lakers over any specific team, especially given they are the one with a clear path to pay him."

A Western Conference scout who predicted retirement said, "It just feels like it's where it's going to end."

Until there is a definitive decision made, it will remain an overarching storyline. And that decision might not come until after the 2025-26 campaign.
