Jonathan Kuminga Reportedly 'Intrigued' by UFA amid Warriors Contract, Trade Rumors

Timothy RappSep 15, 2025

Restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga has reportedly "warmed further to the idea" of signing his qualifying offer amidst his ongoing contract stand-off with the Golden State Warriors, according to ESPN's Shams Charania and Anthony Slater, and is "intrigued by the possibility of unrestricted free agency next summer, sources said, when at least 10 teams are set to have real cap space."

But according to that report, Kuminga hasn't signed the qualifying offer just yet because he's holding out hope that he'll either receive a contract offer he likes from the Warriors or a sign-and-trade option will materialize.

The Warriors certainly wouldn't love the idea of Kuminga becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer, potentially losing him without receiving any assets in return. The Warriors and Kuminga may not be a long-term match given his wonky fit next to Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green in the frontcourt, but he's still a valuable potential trade piece as the Dubs look to maximize the title window during the remainder of Stephen Curry's career.

That essentially goes out the window in any scenario in which Kuminga can become an unrestricted free agent in a year, including the $8 million qualifying offer (which would also give Kuminga a no-trade clause during the 2025-26 season).

We already have an idea of the sorts of offers Kuminga could field a year from now, meanwhile. According to Charania and Slater, the Phoenix Suns reportedly would be willing to sign Kuminga to a four-year deal worth between $80-88 million in a sign-and-trade arrangement with the Warriors, while the Sacramento Kings would be willing to do a three-year deal worth $63-66 million. Both of those proposals include a player option at the end of the deal, which the Warriors have deemed a "nonstarter" in their own negotiations with Kuminga.

Golden State's most recent proposal, per ESPN, is a three-year, $75.2 million deal with a team option for the final season. Per that report, Kuminga believes any deal with a team option attached should be worth around $30 million per season, but would be willing to dip closer to a $20 million average annual value with a player option. The Warriors have also reportedly made one offer without a team option for three years and $54 million, an $18 million AAV.

And so around and around they go.
