Dennis Smith Jr. Reportedly to Work out for Knicks amid NBA Rumors Before 2025 Season

After a year away from the NBA, veteran point guard Dennis Smith Jr. is hoping to earn the chance to return to the league.

Stefan Bondy of the New York Post reported that Smith is scheduled for a workout with the New York Knicks this week. The 27-year-old spent parts of three seasons with the Knicks and most recently played in the NBA in 2023-24 as a member of the Brooklyn Nets.

After going unsigned in free agency ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, Smith pursued a career overseas and joined Real Madrid. He made just two EuroLeague appearances before parting ways with the team in February.

The No. 9 pick in the 2017 NBA draft, Smith was projected to be a reliable two-way point guard. Unfortunately, his offense never quite caught up with his defensive skills, and he has a career average of 9.7 points per game across seven seasons. His shooting efficiency has also been a detriment, as he's connected on just 29.8 percent of his three-pointers over his career.

The Knicks already improved their depth behind star point guard Jalen Brunson by signing veteran floor general Malcolm Brogdon. The team also brought in veteran sixth man Jordan Clarkson to add even more firepower to the backcourt.

Still, New York is willing to give Smith a look as he tries to prove he has what it takes to make it back to the NBA.
