Brian Snitker Reportedly Expected to Step Down as Braves Manager by MLB Insiders

Adam WellsSep 10, 2025

The Atlanta Braves could be in the market for a new manager this offseason.

Per ESPN's Buster Olney, there's a belief among people within MLB who are close to Brian Snitker that he will step down as Braves manager at the end of the 2025 season.

Snitker is in the final season of his current contract and is the oldest active manager in the National League. The only managers older than him are Ron Washington of the Los Angeles Angels (73) and Bruce Bochy of the Texas Rangers (70).

Olney also noted that Snitker has said recently he hasn't made any final decisions about his future, but "mentioned spending time with his grandkids and places where he'd like to travel."

When asked about Snitker's future as manager on Monday, Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos offered a vague response to reporters:

"I mean, look, Snit's going to be in this organization forever. I'm not the owner, obviously; Terry McGuirk is in that role as chairman. Snit will be part of this organization no matter what, well past when I'm here. He's Braves for life. So those are things we always address at the end of the year. We sit down, we talk about staff, we talk about all those things. So our focus the entire year has been on the year, get through the season. All those things are things that we always address in the offseason."

Atlanta been one of the most disappointing teams in the league this season. A slew of injuries and poor performances from key players has contributed to the team having a 65-80 record entering play on Wednesday.

The only NL teams with a worse record than the Braves are the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals and Colorado Rockies.

If the Braves job comes open, it figures to be one of the most sought-after positions for managerial candidates. Even with their rough showing this season, their core of Spencer Strider, Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies, Michael Harris II, Sean Murphy, Matt Olson and Austin Riley are all under contract in 2026.

Chris Sale seems almost certain to be back next season since the Braves hold an $18 million team option on his deal.

Snitker has been with the Braves organization since 1977 when he signed with the team as a minor-league free agent. His playing career ended in 1980, but he stayed with Atlanta as a coach.

The Braves added Snitker to their MLB coaching staff in October 2006 when he was named third base coach. He took over as manager on an interim basis in May 2016 after Fredi González was fired.

Snitker had the interim tag removed from his title in October 2016. He has a record of 800-662 with seven playoff appearances in 10 seasons, winning the World Series in 2021.
