Victor Wembanyama, Spurs to Host Tryouts for New Fan Section at Home Games
Victor Wembanyama is spearheading his idea for the San Antonio Spurs to have a dedicated superfan group at home games, and now the team will host tryouts on Sunday for supporters to join.
The Associated Press reported on the concept, which was developed by Wembanyama after what he's seen in Europe for soccer and basketball games.
"In short, Wembanyama and the Spurs are looking for some high-energy fans who can commit to attending at least 75 percent of the team's home games this season, plus are willing to 'participate in chants and rituals' all while supporting 'with passion and respect.' There's a $999 membership cost to be in the new club, and it comes with some privileges such as discounts and the chance to meet surprise special guests."
The group will feature "nonstop chants, drums, flags, and passion." Wembanyama will be present at Sunday's tryouts to gauge the best fits for the crew.
"If this group of ultras reaches its full potential, I have no doubt that it's going to help us win games in the future for sure," Wembanyama said. "I mean, the 41 regular season games at home this season, that's 41 opportunities for them to push in the fourth quarter and give us that extra energy and that second wind that can give us the win."
Per David Lynch of KENS 5, the Spurs say the group will officially be called the "Supporters Section," located at Section 114 at Frost Bank Center.
The Los Angeles Clippers notably introduced a popular fan group last year in line with the opening of their new stadium, Intuit Dome. The Wall sits behind one of the baskets, and it's a group of passionate fans who have done their best to distract opposing players on the free throw line.
This could be a huge win for the Spurs and a particularly forward-thinking idea for the Spurs and Wembanyama, who's clearly thinking of ways to boost the team's success.
