Giannis Antetokounmpo Leads Greece to FIBA EuroBasket Quarterfinals with Israel Win
Greece is three wins away from a EuroBasket 2025 title, and it has one of the sport's biggest stars to thank.
Giannis Antetokounmpo was unstoppable as he led his country to an 84-79 victory over Israel in Sunday's round of 16 showdown in the single-elimination portion of the tournament. Greece will now face Lithuania in the quarterfinals after it defeated Latvia in its round of 16 game.
To the surprise of nobody, the Milwaukee Bucks star was the driving force in Greece's offensive attack.
He finished with 37 points and 10 rebounds on a stunning 18-of-23 shooting from the field and drew rave reviews in the process:
Israel hung tight for most of the game despite having no answer for Antetokounmpo. Deni Avdija was one of four players in double figures on his team and led the way with 23 points thanks in large part to his ability to get to the free-throw line.
Tomer Ginat (15 points, five rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block) did a little bit of everything, while Roman Sorkin added 14 points and six boards.
However, Israel didn't have a two-time NBA MVP to turn to when the game was on the line.
Antetokounmpo was the only player on Greece to score more than 11 points, but that was all the victors needed. He was unstoppable when attacking the basket, much like he is against NBA defenders when he is spearheading Milwaukee's offense.
Every time Israel appeared to have momentum, Greece turned to Antetokounmpo to turn things around and prevent any comeback chances.
NBA fans are surely paying attention at this point, as Luka Dončić led Slovenia to a victory over Italy in his round of 16 game with 42 points. That means Slovenia and Greece are each two wins away from facing each other in what would be a star-studded final.
If Antetokounmpo and Dončić continue to play like they did Sunday, it is very much in play.
