LeBron James, Nike Drop Epic Hype Video for 'LeBron XXIII' Shoes, 'The Forever King'

Timothy RappSep 1, 2025

Nike Basketball unveiled a very dramatic hype video on Monday for the upcoming LeBron XXIII sneakers, with the Los Angeles Lakers star donning a crown and quite the scowl.

While LeBron's signature kicks have never quite reached the cultural apex of the signature lines that Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant had in their careers, his next iteration could be the final one while he's an active player, bringing a different level of anticipation to this year's edition.

The 40-year-old James has done just about everything in his legendary career at this point. He's a 21-time All-Star, 13-time first-team All-NBA selection, four-time champion, four-time MVP, the NBA's all-time leader in points (42,184) and ranks No. 4 all-time in assists (1,584).

On top of that, James was the face of the so-called "Player Empowerment Era" of the NBA, as star players orchestrated a new level of mobility between teams and off-court business acumen.

This past offseason has perhaps been his most challenging, however, as Father Time looms and the Lakers have made it abundantly clear they are moving forward with Luka Dončić as the face of the franchise. It's unclear if James will play beyond the 2025-26 season and, if he does, it's even murkier whether it would still be for the Lakers.

James, as you might imagine, seemingly wants the Lakers to go for broke putting together a championship team. Los Angeles, meanwhile, has made meaningful upgrades this offseason—adding DeAndre Ayton, Marcus Smart and Jake LaRavia, though the loss of Dorian Finney-Smith wasn't ideal—but have seemed to prioritize future salary cap flexibility over short-term splashes.

So perhaps there was a touch of subtext in LeBron's hype video for his upcoming unveiling with Nike. The so-called "Forever King" doesn't just hand over his crown.
