Adam WellsAug 29, 2025

Heading into the final season of his current contract, P.J. Washington could receive a new deal from the Dallas Mavericks soon.

According to Mike Curtis of the Dallas Morning News, the Mavs are "likely" to give Washington a contract extension at some point.

Curtis noted specific terms of a potential deal are unclear right now.

Friday marks the first day that Washington is eligible to sign a new four-year deal worth up to $90 million. If he signs an extension, it would also make him ineligible to be traded until next offseason under the NBA's six-month rule.

Washington originally signed a three-year, $46.5 million contract with the Charlotte Hornets in August 2023. He was traded to Dallas in February 2024 and was a key part of head coach Jason Kidd's starting lineup during the run to the NBA Finals that same season.

In the Western Conference semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Washington averaged 17.7 points on 46.9 percent three-point shooting and 8.3 rebounds per game in six starts.

The Mavs owe Washington $14.2 million this season on his current deal. His role with the team seems likely to change with a healthy Anthony Davis and Cooper Flagg entering the mix after being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 draft.

Washington is a vital piece for the team because of Davis' injury issues. The 27-year-old can play a lot of minutes off the bench and step into a starting role at power forward if Davis misses time.

Since being acquired by the Mavs, Washington is averaging 13.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game in 86 games.

Given all of the turmoil that plagued the Mavericks last season following the Luka Dončić trade, they are set up for a bounce back year with Flagg and Davis leading the charge. They will also get Kyrie Irving back at some point as he recovers from a torn ACL.
